Ballot Measure 1
Alaska’s salmon fishing industry is critical to our state’s economy and way of life. Salmon fishing provides jobs for over 32,000 Alaskans and generates $2 billion in economic activity each year. However, this vital economic resource is now at risk. Currently, there are no specific rules limiting the amount of damage allowed to fish habitats during a development project.
With a new generation of major mining projects like the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay, our 60-year old state habitat law is outdated and ineffective, with no clear standards protecting clean water and fish passage, nor any requirements for public participation in permitting.
The initiative creates science-based standards to guide how projects will be permitted. It saves Alaskans money on costly clean ups by ensuring foreign mining companies repair damage in salmon habitat. By requiring public comments on major permits issued, the initiative will give Alaskans a voice.
